Bay Area Artistic
SwimTeam

for
Athletes with Disabilities
(AWD)

'BETTER TOGETHER'

WHO are we?

WHO are we?

We are an artistic swimming team, previously known as 'synchronized swimming'. Established in 2015 in San Jose, California, we primarily train youths with cognitive and/or physical disabilities in our sport. Operating as a private boutique co-op team during the school year, we are currently coaching up to 10 swimmers for the 2026 season, and subject to the availability of our coaching staff every season with a MAX. of 16 for our entire team. We offer highly specialized training for success. We operate as a strategic opportunity team that ensures equitable access for youth swimmers with disabilities.  We always consider applicants who are non-disabled and qualified to participate with our team as beginner Novice swimmers if we have openings in that category. Sometimes, disabled and non-disabled swimmers wait as long as 1 or 2+ seasons to join our team.

KEY Activities & Team Focus

KEY Activities & Team Focus

1) Inclusivity and Para-sports: The team's primary mission is to provide opportunities for athletes with disabilities (AWD) ages 7 and up, who often have fewer options in mainstream sports. 2) Training and Development: We offer coaching and long-term athlete development programs to help swimmers progress from basic swimming skills (note: we do not teach or instruct for initial swim lessons) to advanced techniques across six different levels (Tiers). 3) Competition: Swimmers participate in various competitions, including local, regional, state, national invitationals, and international events, within the para-sports categories. The goal is long term athlete development and to help athletes reach to higher levels in competitions. 4) Advocacy: Our team works with our local advocacy organization, Artistic Swim AWD-USA for the inclusion of artistic swimming for disability competitions and future Paralympics. 5) Volunteer-Based: The team operates with a dedicated volunteer coaching staff who invest significant time in athlete development. The team aims to empower young people with disabilities through sport, helping them gain self-discipline, confidence, and teamwork skills that benefit their daily lives.

WHY we DO what we do...

WHY we DO what we do...

Over the years, it has been observed that swimmers with disabilities and impairments have fewer opportunities with community swim teams and other mainstream sports. Athletes with disabilities/impairments often struggle to progress in sports unless they already possess advanced skills, such as speed swimming, water polo, etc. Our focus is on artistic swimming, and we have seen our long-term athletes successfully join high school and collegiate water polo and competitive swim teams, with some moving on to Paralympic Swimming. We are committed to helping young swimmers who wish to incorporate artistic swimming or other water sports into their lifelong physical activities. While not every swimmer will reach professional levels—approximately 5% of non-disabled athletes do, and even fewer athletes with disabilities achieve this—so we take pride in making a difference in the lives of young people with disabilities/impairments by teaching them with skills that benefit their daily lives through our team program. Currently, we do not provide masters training, but we do coach young adult swimmers with disabilities/impairments, with certain exceptions. Older adults with disabilities may find opportunities with artistic swim teams that offer Masters programs. For more information on Masters swimming, please visit the USA Artistic Swimming website at: www.usaartisticswim.org

Our Training Season
We operate on a school year season, from October to the end of May. Our schedule includes mandatory practices three saturdays a month and twice a month optional Weds night training in the west San Jose area. We are a seasonal team, sponsored by our organization, Artistic Swimming for Athletes with Disabilities. (Artistic Swim AWD).

While we consider non disabled novice swimmers (ages 8 to 15) under certain circumstances for our team, our program is primarily designed for youths with disabilities/impairments. Swimmers with disabilities (AWD) recieve priority enrollment into our team program as long they pass the assessement.(which includes ability to participate in monthly competitions, understanding of water safety and a positive attitude).

During the Summer, we extend our season training to CURRENT team swimmers for an optional one month special Summer Camp (mid June to mid July) in preparation for the California State Games-San Diego in July every year.

We accept new swimmer enrollment beginning (first come, first served) August 25th until November 1st.

Our program goals are long term athlete development for artistic swimming parasport competitions.

We have a strict capacity for our team and once team slots are full, there will be a wait list established and will expire on Nov.30th every year should there not be any vacancies for the season. Transfering (AWD) swimmers from another artistic swim team are accepted anytime during the season.

TIER1=Pre-Comp & Beginner Novice Program (includes non-disabled swimmers)

TIER1=Pre-Comp & Beginner Novice Program (includes non-disabled swimmers)

TIER1 Program (October through May every season) Our TIER1 beginner program is the perfect opportunity for swimmers ages 7 to 13, to improve their swimming skills during the October through May season. Pre-comp swimmers have the option to compete at local competitions, while our Tier1 Novices can compete at local, regional, and some national and international invitationals. Most new swimmers remain in this Tier for up to 4+ seasons as a beginner Novice Swimmer. PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a 'learn to swim' session. Swimmers must have minimal proficient swim skills from a previous certified swim lesson program within the past 2 years and NOT be afraid of water and understand and able to demonstrate basic pool safety/drowning prevention. A free swim assessment will be conducted to ensure your swimmer is the correct fit & qualify for this program. This program capacity is 5 slots with one program coach and up to 3 coaching assistants.

TIERS 2 & 3=Advanced Novice Program (includes non-disabled swimmers)

TIERS 2 & 3=Advanced Novice Program (includes non-disabled swimmers)

The Advanced Novice Tiers program is designed for swimmers who have a basic understanding and have demonstrated the skills needed to advance through the program Tiers Levels. New Swimmers may be able to start in the TIERS 2 or 3 advanced Novice level program, especially youths who are ages 12 and older with solid novice swim skills. Most swimmers remain in each advanced Novice Tier for at least 2 to 3+ seasons. This program has 5 athlete slots and is managed by one coach with up to 3 coaching assistants.

TIERS 4, 5 & 6=Advanced Intermediate & Junior Program (AWD ONLY) Tiers 4-6

TIERS 4, 5 & 6=Advanced Intermediate & Junior Program (AWD ONLY) Tiers 4-6

AWD Swimmers in this program have progressed through the Tiers, season after season. This program is for intermediate and advanced artistic swimmers. Most swimmers may remain in these higher-performance TIERS for up to 2+ seasons. AWD Swimmers who transfer from other artistic swim teams who are proficient and have the skills for advanced training, are assessed and placed in one of the TIERS in this program level. Tier 6 is the Top Tier for Athletes w/Disabilities. These Tiers are eligible to compete in all AWD high performance invitational National/International Competitions including future Paralympics (T6 or above). >The exception would be for AWD athletes who are coming from a high-performance gymnastics/dance program with STRONG swim skills. These Tiers are designed for athletes with disabilities who are eligible to compete in the Tiers parasport categories at sanctioned USA Artistic Swim Competitions as well as Int'l Competitions with TIERS categories. This program has 6 slots and managed by 2 Coaches and up to 2 coaching assistants.

Coach Raquel began her artistic swimming career in 2009 with two local teams and ultimately started the Bay Area Artistic Swim Team in 2015 to allow for athletes w/disabilities (AWD) to have full opportunities in all competitions. She brings a wealth of experience with customer service and satisfaction while working as a senior customer service rep in internet and retail services. Coach Tulisha's experience and ability to coach up and coming athletes to enjoy what artistic swimming has to offer has led to numerous successes for athletes who would have very little opportunity to excel in other sports. Coach Tulisha gives every swimmer the opportunity to develop their skills while having fun. Coach Tulisha believes in long term athlete development and has the ability to encourage young swimmers to stay engaged and to fulfill their dreams of showcasing their acquired skills to the world. Coach Tulisha graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in public relations. Coach Tulisha is also a caregiver for her mom, who is visually impaired and knows the frustrations athletes w/disabilities face when it comes to equity and inclusion. Volunteer Coaching Programs

We are blessed to have a wealth of volunteers who are college bound knowledgeable and experienced swimmers on our coaching staff. We are proud to continue expanding our coaching staff to send out in the community to bridge the gap for our underserved population of youths with disabilities and to assist with the future of inclusion and success for our swimmers. We highly value ALL of our Coaching Staff Volunteers who come to us from all 'walks of life' leaving our swimmers with cherished experiences and improved performances. Many go onto college to pursue great careers in a variety of professions including medicine, education, politics, etc. And, many come back to coach part time as a lifelong experience!

Volunteering
We are an ALL VOLUNTEER TEAM!
That's why its fun to work with us!

Meaning NONE of our Coaching Staff is paid for their work with our team swimmers. We recognized that our volunteers have more of a commitment and tie in with our team to ensure that the atheletes we serve are trained with compassion, non-judgement and understanding of their abilities and disabilities.

It is the Volunteers who bring excellence to our team with their wide variety of experience, strong desire and focus for inclusion and equity advocacy for our underserved population of athletes with disabilities in our sport. We always welcome new volunteers who can commit to a minimum of one season with us! It is part time and you can decide your schedule based on our practice sessions, competitions and locations.

Our Schedule:
>First THREE Saturdays of every month, October to the end of May every year. 1pm to 3:45pm in West San Jose at our Community Center Pool.

>Twice a month Weds, 630p-8pm at our Indoor Pool.

>Any Meet/Competition locally, regionally, nationally, internationally that we participate in Dec through August.

Giving back is ALWAYS appreciated especially for those who do not need the measure of a paycheck to be recognized for the excellent work that they do for our athletes.

We recognize our hard working volunteers with recommendation letters, referrals for college, resumes, job applications, school/church required hours, community work and advocacy, etc.

* If you are under 18, you MUST email Cc a parent!

Do we need medical verification from our Doctor?

Yes, our enrollment agreement mandates it. This confidential documentation is necessary for participation in parasports categories and competitions. Moreover, it helps us identify any required accommodations for your swimmer while they are part of our team. It is NOT required for non-disabled swimmers.

Does your team offer grants, scholarships or bingo to pay for training?

Our team's training expenses are traditionally less than those of many other swim teams offering comparable programs for athletes with disabilities. Although there are numerous grants and scholarships available for swimmers with physical or cognitive disabilities, these are individual awards that the swimmer must apply for and secure to cover our program costs. Regrettably, we do not have any team grants or scholarships available for new swimmers.

How come you do not accept non-disabled swimmers?

Our organization, Artistic Swim AWD-USA, supports our team, as part of the mission/goals to offer sports opportunities to swimmers with disabilities and to broaden the reach of artistic swimming to athletes with disabilities who aspire to compete at higher levels. While we do NOT turn away non-disabled swim applicants, our priority enrollment are for swimmers with disabilities. If we have openings, we will consider non-disabled athletes who meet our assessment criteria and can also commit to competing in mixed abilities duet/trio/team routines along with athletes with disabilities (AWD) on our team.
Given the small size of our swim team, non-disabled athletes—and even those with disabilities—might find more opportunities with other local teams with AWD training programs or mainstream artistic swim teams, especially if we have no current openings.

If I am accepted to the Team, do I get to chose who coaches me?

Our team offers trained and seasoned coaches for every level. We boast a roster of dedicated coaches and coaching assistants experienced with a diverse range of swimmers. Given our team's intimate size, coaches occasionally rotate among the Tiers, allowing all team swimmers the opportunity to become acquainted with and learn from our entire coaching staff.

Can't I just join your team for recreational swimming?

Our program provides recreational competitive swimming for beginners (Tiers 1 and 2), with a primary focus on competing. We are dedicated to the long-term development of athletes in our sport and other aquatic disciplines, especially for swimmers with disabilities who are looking to engage in the sport or physical activities for life. For individuals seeking non-competitive training, many local artistic swim teams offer recreational, seasonal, and summer programs. For additional details, please visit www.californiaartisticswimming.com

When are the training sessions each month & how much is it?

We recognize that some of our swimmers may have commitments to other activities, such as band practice, sports, or community service. However, we expect full dedication to our part-time training program. The monthly fee is a flat rate covering pool usage and administrative expenses. All our coaches are volunteers; we do not have any paid staff. The flat rate for each program is designed to allow for maximum training time. Our training program includes the first 3 Saturdays (1pm-3:45pm) each month, October through May, and up to TWO Weds each month as 'extra sessions'.  Monthly costs are not prorated for missed practices or late arrivals, except in cases of verified medical issues relating to an impairment, where we do provide credit for the days missed. Cost for each program varies and changes every season based on our pool rental/admin costs. Please email us for the program you are interested in. We are currently operating for the 2026 season, which ends on August 31st, 2026. Our 2026 season begins in October 2025. Open enrollment begins in late August and ends on Nov 1st. Swimmers transferring from other artistic swim teams accepted at any time during our season if we have an opening.

When & where are the practices held?

We hold our practices on SAT afternoons (1pm-3:45pm) at a local community center pool in the Cambrian area of west San Jose. We offer 'extra sessions' (not requires but highly recommended) for figures training (technical training) twice a month on Weds evenings from 6:30pm to 8pm at an indoor pool in Campbell.

If I am a current swimmer, will I automatically be accepted for the next season?

Our current team swimmers are granted priority enrollment if they meet the coaching staff’s expectations for their enrolled program. However, if they fall short, they will be advised that our team participation may not align with their continued goals. At the close of the season, we assess each swimmer based on several factors, including attendance, performance, attitude, parent involvement, and behavioral issues. Our evaluation aims to determine their suitability for each Tier. Regrettably, there are instances where swimmers may not be the ideal match for our team or our sport in the following seasons.

Is being on the Team an annual commitment?

Yes. We require an annual nonrefundable Federation registration & team fee that varies by program tier. The monthly team payment is a nonrefundable flat rate. Should a swimmer decide to leave the team before the season ends, no refunds will be issued for the annual registration. As the monthly payment is a flat rate, we require a 30-day notice for leaving the team. We do not offer prorated refunds if a swimmer departs AFTER the first of the month. While we recognize hardships and unforeseen events such as injuries, hospitalizations, or family emergencies, our policy is firm but flexible under certain medical circumstances. Upon enrollment, you acknowledge our expectation of full participation with a swimmer enrollment agreement. Should you be unable to fulfill these expectations, priority will be given to swimmers who are able to commit.

Can swimmers take vacation breaks from team training during the year?

Our swim team operates seasonally and is separate from school-affiliated swim teams. We are aware of the numerous school holidays and breaks. While family time is important, we encourage consistent training during these periods. We discourage taking family vacations during school breaks, except for the traditional Holiday season and summer break. We do offer an optional summer camp for current swimmers focused on competing in summer events that involve travel to Southern California for State Games in the San Diego area. Families often schedule their vacations to coincide with these competition venues during the summer. We also respect all U.S. and cultural holidays, in addition to providing training exemptions for swimmers observing specific cultural and religious holidays. Swimmers whose family schedules vacation during most school breaks may find our team's commitment requirements challenging. In such cases, we suggest exploring recreational team programs offered by other teams.

Do I automatically advance to other Tier levels?

Typically, swimmers dedicate over two years at each Tier level to hone their skills and achieve proficiency. Coaches assess each swimmer's capabilities to determine their readiness to advance to the next level or to remain in their current level. Key factors in this evaluation include enhanced performance scores over the season, along with attitude, conduct, and the ability to collaborate with coaches and team members.

Is remote coaching available?

IF you are an AWD who lives in an area (anywhere in the World) where you do not have access to a coach, but access to a pool, we can definitely offer online facetime coaching for a minimal fee to cover admin costs, even at your poolside! You must register for our team and pay the applicable fees. IF you are a member of another club, you must remain a member of that club but use our club for auxiliary or additional training.
